Contemplating greatness…

Today is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Elizabeth Zimmermann. She of the infamous Baby Surprise Jacket and numerous other amazing garments, all knitted many hundreds of times. She’s also responsible for the ‘Percentage System’ for calculating the proportions of a sweater based on the chest measurement alone. The very system I will be using when I cast on shortly for my very own Chipmunk cardigan.

If you haven’t come across Elizabeth Zimmermann before then I can highly recommend starting with Knitting Without Tears. Not only is it one of the most valuable knitting books I’ve read in terms of technique and philosophy but it’s genuinely funny too. EZ possessed a dry humour and way with words…

Elizabeth’s work lives on through Schoolhouse Press, run by her daughter Meg Swansen.
